THE WORLD ON STAGE

Every year the magnificent art heritage town of Spoleto opens its curtains and welcomes the world with its Festival. Its monumental beauty is as intact as its historical vocation to art. The stage wings open even before entering its streets, with the majestic scenery of the Rocca Albornoziana and the magnificent sequence of arches on the Ponte delle Torri. In a few hundred meters we find a Roman Theater of the first century BC, the seventeenth-century theater Caio Melisso Spazio, the fourteenth-century complex of San Nicolò and the nineteenth-century Teatro Nuovo, within a refined city harmony that includes Lombard and Gothic churches, medieval cloisters, auditoriums and precious noble palaces and, last but not least, the large stage Piazza del Duomo, with the Basilica built in the twelfth century.

The Festival of Two Worlds originated in this incomparable magnitude in 1958, thanks to the composer Gian Carlo Menotti who chose it as the ideal place to found an event that celebrated art in all its forms. Memorable shows were staged and the Festival soon became the appointment par excellence with cultural ferment on both sides of the ocean. The greatest protagonists of cinema and theatrical scenes, famous dancers and choreographers, poets, playwrights and writers, all came to Spoleto.

In its 61st edition, the Festival of Two Worlds confirms the original intuition that made it an inimitable meeting place between culture and exhibition, and in today’s success, the appeal and prestige of a great, renewed appointment of international resonance. Under the guidance of Giorgio Ferrara, director of the Festival since 2008, Spoleto has once again become the fascinating place in which every summer, from every part of the world, the great arts of the stage come together: Opera, Music, Dance, Theater. A meeting that recaptures the train of thought between stories, disciplines and different looks, in a passionate pursuit of excellence among the Arts, on the contemporary scene. Amidst glamour and provocation, historic theatrical premieres and biting avant-garde interpretations, the Festival of Spoleto seems to reaffirm the wise Italian vocation to the harmony of cultures as an exchange, hypothesis, and opportunity for growth, in spite of every economic and social crisis of our time. Its calendar embraces programs of the most famous classical traditions in continuous dialogue with everything that appears new and persuasive today on stages of the whole world, confirming itself prestigious limelight for famous actors and artists, as well as a showcase for emerging ones , and again feverish workshop of original productions.
