The Final Concert of the 56th edition of the Festival of 2Worlds celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of two of the greatest composers of all ages: Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner.

JAMES CONLON
Internationally recognized as one of the leading directors of the contemporary scene, James Conlon, in his career, has performed in almost all of North America and every European capital of music. He is Music Director of the Los Angeles Opera, of the Ravinia Festival, summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and of the Cincinnati May Festival, the oldest choral music festival in the United States. He was Principal Conductor of the Opera National de Paris (1995-2004) for longer than any other director, General Music Director of the City of Cologne in Germany (1989-2002), also holding the positions of Music Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra and the Cologne Opera. He was also Music Director for the Rotterdam Philharmonic (1983-1991). Since his debut in 1976, he has directed more than 250 performances at the Metropolitan Opera. Renowned for his interpretations of the Wagner repertoire, since the beginning of his mandate in 2006 at the Los Angeles Opera, he has tried to establish a Wagnerian tradition in Los Angeles. In five years he has directed seven of Wagner’s works, including the Ring Cycle. For a month, throughout the city, the Ring Festival was held, in collaboration with 125 Arts institutions. In June 2010 he conducted three cycles of the Ring at the Los Angeles Opera. This series will continue on the occasion of the bicentennial of Wagner in 2013 and in the future as well. Conlon is currently carrying out a three-year tribute to Benjamin Britten, culminating in November 2013 on the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth with a concert of Britten’s War Requiem and a Britten Festival similar to that of Wagner. A long time devotee of Britten’s music, he will direct some of his works in the U.S. and Europe in the coming seasons, including The Turn of the Screw, Albert Herring, Death in Venice and The Rape of Lucretia at the Los Angeles Opera, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Teatro dell’Opera of Rome. The tribute includes symphonic and choral works with the NDR Sinfonie Orchester in Hamburg, the Orchestre National de France in Paris, with the Chicago Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Filarmonica della Scala and the Symphonic Montreal. With the aim of spreading the works of composers suppressed by the Nazi regime, he has devoted himself to the programming of their music in North America and Europe: at the Ravinia Festival with the series Breaking the Silence and the Los Angeles Opera with Recovered Voices. For his efforts in bringing the music of these composers to international attention, he received the Crystal Globe Award from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the ZemliskyPrize. He is also the founder and Artistic Advisor of the Orel Foundation, an organization dedicated to highlighting and representing the works of these authors. He has recorded for the major record companies and received numerous awards. He has appeared in several television series and at the Metropolitan Opera in performances presented on DVD. More recently he has presented the titles of Der Zweg by Zemlisky, Der zerbrochene Krug by Ullmann and Die Vögel by Braunfels, recorded on DVD. He has received two Grammy Awards (Best Classical Recording and Best Opera Album) for The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Kurt Weill, the Los Angeles Opera production, released on DVD. He was appointed Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1996 and promoted to Comandante in 2004. In 2002 he received France’s highest award the Legion d’Onore, from the French President, Jacques Chirac. For the Festival of 2Worlds, in 2009 he conducted Gianni Schicchi directed by Woody Allen, in 2011 the final concert in Piazza Duomo and, in 2012, he conducted a concert at Teatro Caio Melisso Spazio Carla Fendi with music by Franz Schreker, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

FILARMONICA DELLA SCALA
The Filarmonica della Scala was first set up by Claudio Abbado and the musicians of the La Scala Opera House in 1982 with the objective of developing a symphonic repertoire in order to add a further dimension to La Scala’s great operatic tradition. The following year the Filarmonica formed a separate Association. Carlo Maria Giulini conducted the Orchestra in more than 90 concerts and took it on its first international tours. Riccardo Muti then became the Principal Conductor from 1987 to 2005, helping the Orchestra to grow artistically and establishing it as a regular visitor to some of the most prestigious international concert halls. The Orchestra has also been able to develop fruitful collaborative relations with some of the greatest conductors of the time: Georges Prêtre, Lorin Maazel and Wolfgang Sawallisch all worked with the Orchestra in its first concert seasons. There were also important contributions over the years from Leonard Bernstein, Semyon Bychkov, Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Gustavo Dudamel, Peter Eötvös, Christoph Eschenbach, John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergiev, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Gennadij Rozdestvenskij, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Yuri Temirkanov and Franz Welser–Möst. From 2006 the Filarmonica has intensified its relations with Daniel Barenboim (the Musical Director of Teatro alla Scala conducted the inaugural concert of 2012/2013 season on december 3, 2012 with the famed mezzosoprano Cecilia Bartoli) Riccardo Chailly, Daniel Harding, Daniele Gatti and Valery Gergiev.
The Filarmonica’s commitments include its own autonomous season of concerts and La Scala’s symphonic season based on a contractual programme concluded with the Opera House itself. It has also undertaken numerous foreign tours performing abroad more than 450 concerts since its foundation. Over the last decade, it has done more concerts abroad than any other Italian orchestra, significantly increasing the profile of Italian music-making internationally.
Important milestones in recent years have included the Orchestra’s debut in the United States with Riccardo Chailly in 2007 and in China with Myung-Whun Chung in 2008, the same year which marked its return to the Musikverein in Vienna under Daniele Gatti. In 2009 the Filarmonica gave its first concert at the Berlin Philharmonie under Daniel Barenboim, also returning to Paris with Pierre Boulez and Maurizio Pollini. 2010 concerts included a return trip to Asia with Semyon Bychkov for the Shanghai Expo and in Berlin under the baton of Diego Matheuz. In 2011 the Filarmonica has been conducted on tour by Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Daniel Harding, Gianandrea Noseda and Georges Prêtre. The Orchestra 2012 tour programme involved Daniel Barenboim conducting concerts in Paris, Berlin and Frankfurt, and Daniel Harding taking it to Prague, Linz, Stuttgart, Dresden and Bonn. Further commitments include the Filarmonica’s participation in the White Nights Festival in Saint Petersburg under Valery Gergiev, with a return to Germany with Fabio Luisi.
The Filarmonica has commissioned new pieces from Giorgio Battistelli, Carlo Boccadoro, Azio Corghi, Luis de Pablo, Pascal Dusapin, Peter Eötvös, Ivan Fedele, Matteo Franceschini, Luca Francesconi, Salvatore Sciarrino, Giovanni Sollima and Fabio Vacchi.
The Orchestra has a history of involvement in efforts to promote music for the new generation and has a policy of opening rehearsals for the season’s concerts to schools. The initiative "Sound, Music!" is specially designed to appeal to primary school children. It also has a long association with Milan’s main scientific institutions and voluntary bodies, organising open rehearsals and special concerts for their benefit. It regularly participates in the MiTo Festival in concerts which have introduced symphonic music to an extremely wide audience.
The Filarmonica has also made numerous recordings for the Sony, Decca and Emi labels, including the album Viva Verdi (Decca) with Riccardo Chailly celebrating the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
The concerts of the Filarmonica season are often recorded for subsequent television broadcast by Rai and broadcast live by Rai’s Radio3 and medici.tv and, since 2012, are broadcasted live in cinemas worldwide.
The activities of the Filarmonica della Scala are not subsidised by public funds. It does however receive support from the UniCredit, the Orchestra’s main institutional partner.
